Cat7 cable is a type of copper cable. They are used to create an Ethernet connection in your home or business. For more information on Ethernet, check out our blog on the definition of Ethernet.

Cat7 cables can be connected to almost anything with an Ethernet port. Cat7 cable is the international standard ISO/IEC 11801, created for cabling in general telecommunications systems. This can be deployed in numerous applications ranging from residential to building and factory use.

Cat7 Ethernet cable speed

Cat7 is designed to improve on the previous category by having a maximum speed of 10Gb and frequencies up to 600MHz. It does this by having a tighter twist ratio on the wires, and also includes shielding around the individual wires. Shielding helps protect your cables from EMI and also helps achieve higher frequencies. The structure you will see on a Cat7 Ethernet cable is S/FTP. This structure has a double shield design. Each of its wires is wrapped in a shield and a layer of shielding.

Cat7 maximum length

Cat7 is similar to Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6A with a maximum distance of 328 feet (100 meters). This distance includes a 90-meter trunk cable and a 10-meter patch cord at the end of the channel. If you run cables longer than this recommended distance rating, you run the risk of signal quality issues and attenuation over longer lengths. That's why it's always recommended that you keep cable lengths to 328 feet or less. With all the necessary equipment and proper cable termination, you can run 10Gb on Cat7 up to 328 feet.
